e’ve been working on Project Lexa for a little bit now, so it’s time to finally ask ourselves: what’s the actual name of this game going to be?
“Project Lexa” was always planned as just a working title — just something to use to refer to the game while we continued to work on it. Eventually, we’d figure out a final name.
The problem is… it’s been really hard!
I’ve honestly never had this much difficulty naming something before. The names for our main cast came to us rather quickly, so I figured the game’s name would eventually reveal itself to us too. The team brainstormed a lot of different types of names — mechanics-focused names, heady science fiction names, punny names — but the problem is that “Lexa” was kind of too good of a working title. It evokes the idea of language — the main focus of the game — while also being an empty vessel to hold our other aspirations for the game: a focus on narrative, adventure, and trying to rescue yourself from being stranded on an alien planet.
So, after a lot of hemming and hawing, we settled on it: Project Lexa is now Lexa!
But that leaves another lingering question: what’s the name of our protagonist?
Lex is Now Lexa Too!
It would be really confusing to have the name of the main character and the name of the game be separated by only one letter, so we decided to fix that: Interface Specialist Lex Kelza is now Interface Specialist Lexa Kelz!
This feels right. This game is about Lexa’s story as much as it is about translating an alien language, so having her and the game’s name be one in the same helps give them equal weight.
We’ve made the name change to both Lexa and Lexa in several spots both on the site — such as the Lexa landing page as well as in our crew introductory post — and off — such as Steam. We have, however, kept the old names in other, older blog posts on the site for posterity. We also made a new URL for you to easily get back to the Lexa landing page: lexa-game.com!
We’re excited to finally have Lexa’s name out in the world. Now, it’s time to get back to work!
