Happy Unbirthday to Us

Happy Unbirthday to Us

April 12th, 2021 | 12:00 pm ET

Let's all congratulate us with another cup of tea.

T

he ongoing pandemic has certainly made time lose meaning — days, weeks, and months are blurring a bit. I’ve definitely known a couple friends that have decided that they are not celebrating the big 3-0 or the big 4-0 and are instead taking a second stab at being 29 or 39. Heck, even I’m turning 30 at the end of the year, and I’m still waiting to celebrate my 29th birthday properly.

But this all made me wonder… when is Ward Games’ birthday?

What even could be considered a birthday for a game studio? Is it the day you decide to start making games? Or is it the day you finally put a game out? How about the day you finally make a Twitter account? That always feels official. For us, we always celebrated the studio’s founding with the day we published our first episode of the Wardcast — July 13th, 2015:

That would make Ward five… almost six years old. Getting up there in years for a solo dev aided by a couple of friends!

But the trend seems to be to make that special day the date of the studio’s incorporation, which for Ward would be… today! April 12, 2017, was when I finally put in the paperwork to make Ward Games an official limited liability corporation.

So we’re retconning our birthday then — turning back the clocks and shaving off two years. Much like the phoenix reborn from flame, we’re rising from the ashes younger and full of vigor, ready to take on the world!

So here’s to four official years as Ward Games! And here’s to many more!
